Near the end of the 12th century, a little boy from Kent, Simon Stock, wanted to live as a hermit. His reputation for holiness spread, and Our Lady called him to be a Carmelite brother on the historic Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. When Saladin and his Islamic army took back Jerusalem in 1187 AD, the Carmelite monks moved to England. Eventually, St. Simon Stock received the Scapular from Our Lady as a sign of protection for the devout and faithful.
